Indications of Avas 40

Avas 40 is a member of the statin drug class. It lowers cholesterol and lowers the risk of developing heart disease. A fatty substance called cholesterol causes your blood vessels to narrow as it accumulates, which can result in a heart attack or stroke.

Pharmacology of Avas 40

Anti-HMG-CoA Reductase It is a selective inhibitor, atorvastatin. This enzyme plays a rate-limiting role in the transformation of HMG-CoA into mevalonate, a precursor to sterols including cholesterol. By inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver, as well as by increasing the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell surface, which leads to improved LDL uptake and catabolism, atorvastatin lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels.

Dosage & Administration of Avas 40

Primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia are two types of hyperlipidemia:

• Adults: 10 mg once daily is the usual starting dose; if needed, increase to 80 mg once daily over the course of at least 4 weeks.
• Child (10–18 years): Begin with 10 mg once daily and gradually increase over the course of 4 weeks to the typical daily maximum of 20 mg.

Family history of high cholesterol

• Adults: Begin with 10 mg daily and increase it gradually to 40 mg once daily over the course of at least 4 weeks. If necessary, increase to a maximum of 80 mg once daily (or 40 mg once daily combined with anion-exchange resin in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia).
• Child (10–18 years): If necessary, start with 10 mg once daily and work your way up to 80 mg once daily, at least every four weeks

Prevention of cardiovascular events-

• Adults: Start with 10 mg once daily and adjust as needed.

Interactions

The risk of myopathy while taking Avas 40 is increased by concurrent use of cyclosporin, fibric acid derivatives, erythromycin, azole antifungals, and niacin. No clinically significant interactions between atorvastatin and antihypertensives or hypoglycemic drugs were observed. Patients should be closely monitored if taking atorvastatin along with digoxin, erythromycin, oral contraceptives, colestipol, antacids, or warfarin.

Contraindications of Avas 40

Patients who are hypersensitive to any component of Avas 40 should avoid taking it. Active liver disease or unexplained chronic transaminase increases are contraindicated with atorvastatin. It's also not recommended for patients who have had a significant reaction to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in the past.

Side Effects of Avas 40

Avas 40 is well tolerated by most people. Constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain are the most common Atorvastatin side effects. Infection, headache, back pain, rash, asthenia, arthralgia, and myalgia are some of the other side effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation

During pregnancy, Avas 40 is not recommended. There is no evidence of safety in pregnant women. There have been no controlled clinical trials with atorvastatin in pregnant women. There have been a few cases of congenital abnormalities following intrauterine exposure to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Reproduction toxicity has been demonstrated in animal studies. The use of atorvastatin by the mother may lower the amount of mevalonate in the fetus, which is a precursor to cholesterol manufacturing. Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or fear they are pregnant should avoid taking atorvastatin. Treatment with atorvastatin should be stopped for the duration of the pregnancy or until the lady is no longer pregnant.

Precautions & Warnings

• Before starting treatment and then on a regular basis after that, liver function tests should be performed. If a patient has a history of liver disease or excessive alcohol consumption, atorvastatin should be used with caution. Atropine therapy should be discontinued if myopathy or significantly elevated CPK levels are found.
• If you experience fatigue, muscle weakness, or pain, let your doctor know.
  Your doctor may perform routine liver function tests both before and after the course of treatment. If you experience symptoms of a liver condition, such as stomach pain, unusually dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, let your doctor know right away.
• Before beginning treatment with this medication, let your doctor know if you have diabetes, liver disease, or kidney disease. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels frequently because Avas 20 may make them go up.
